The birth of Surf - Various Artists (Ace records)

Ace records do a fantastic job of collecting the best of instrumental surf classics. If you know nothing of the genre then this is the place to start. My first brush with reverb soaked surf classics was when Quentin Tarantino laced his Pulp Fiction (arguably one of the best films ever made) with a number of surf classics. Some of Tarantino's choices are on this collection The lively ones Surf Rider and the Tornadoes Bustin Surfboards. The real treats however are the ones you have never heard Eddie Duane and the rebels, Johnny and the hurricanes and other wonderfully named bands from the late fifties early sixties. Of course which surf album would be complete with out the Surfaris Wipeout and the king of surf guitar Dick Dale and the over used Misirlou.

Wet suits are of course optional.
